The Halstead Family in Sydney, Australia

Lavender Bay, circa 1900, which lies on the north shore of Sydney Harbour. The Halstead family settled in this area and the Halstead boat shed was on the bay (below the 'V' marked). Lavender Bay lies immediately to the west of the present-day Sydney harbour bridge.

Laban, Sarah and their five children arrived in Sydney in January, 1875. Laban's brothers Samuel and James were already in Australia. James Halstead started a boat-building business based in Lavender Bay.

I've traced 8 vessels built by Halsteads: Centennial, Chelmsford, Esther, Indignant, Irresistible, Minx, Oceana and Vixen, but the companies started by James Halstead built many more, including ferries which crossed Sydney Harbour. James Halstead's early life in Australia is well documented in the Gore Hill Memorial Cemetery Biographies Volume 1.

"Oceana was in service for the Watson's Bay & South Shore Steam Ferry Company in the late 1880's and early 1890's.

She is notable in that she is the only ferry (?) built by the company that would eventually become famous for making fast wooden speed boats in the 1930's.

She ended her days as a launch on the Manning River at Taree where she was wrecked on October 7th, 1903".
